Just one week before rising baseball star José Fernández was killed in a boating accident, he shared a photo on Instagram celebrating the news that he was expecting a baby.
The Marlins star pitcher died on Sunday morning along with two others in a boating accident at Miami Beach, Florida. He was just 24 years old.
Fernández’s photograph showed his pregnant girlfriend on Instagram, with the now-heartbreaking words: “I’m so glad you came into my life. I’m ready for where this journey is gonna take us together. #familyfirst.”

According to reports, Fernández was dating Carla Mendoza. The couple had been together since at least September 2015, when Fernández was photographed embracing Mendoza after he became the first pitcher in the modern era to win his first 17 career home decisions (the designation given to the starting pitcher whose team wins), the Associated Press reported.
The team announced the news of his death on Sunday morning with a statement on the Major League Baseball website. It sent shockwaves through the sporting world.
“The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”
