Airline bans use of devices on flights in and out of U.S.

In a notice that appears to be prompted by federal U.S. officials, Royal Jordanian Airlines issued a new ban on electronic devices on planes Monday.

A tweet from the airline’s official account listed new rules for all passengers flying in and out of the U.S. that start on Mar. 21 and spell horror for anyone who gets bored on long distance journeys.

“Carrying any electronic or electrical device on board the flight cabins is strictly prohibited,” the statement said, meaning that bringing out your iPad to watch a movie is apparently now a no-no on the carrier.

Prohibited devices include laptops, tablets, cameras, DVD players and electronic games. Cellphones and medical devices are OK, but everything else has to go into your checked luggage — which mostly defeats the purpose of all these devices to entertain you during a long international flight.

Jon Ostrower, an aviation reporter at CNN, posted Monday that the ban appears to affect not just Royal Jordanian, but more than a dozen Middle Eastern and African-based airlines flying to and from the U.S.

A media spokesman from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the agency had “no comment on potential security precautions,” but said they would provide any updates. We’ve reached out to Royal Jordanian and other Middle Eastern-based airlines for further details.

Meanwhile people are responding to the Royal Jordanian post and seem super frustrated with the sudden rule change. Many commented that the airline would lose customers over this policy. One person asked if they could still wear their watch onboard.

Since Royal Jordanian did not make clear that this appears to be a new federal rule, people are also posting their confusion about why this is happening.
